Course Description: HSC Heritage Chinese is a new course
characterised by its bilingual and bicultural elements. It focuses on issues,
perspectives and contexts. For teachers, the planning and teaching can be quite
challenging. Facilitated by Wei Leu who has extensive knowledge of the syllabus
as well as experience of teaching, the purpose of this workshop is to help
teachers gain a deep understanding of the requirements of the syllabus so that
they can produce their own teaching programs.
Course outline: The workshop
will include the explicit interpretation of the syllabus and the analysis of the examination
specification and the HSC paper. Participants will be divided into groups to
design and produce a scope & sequence plan and units of work, based on the
requirements of the syllabus. They will
also work with other teachers to design a mapping which will include the
sub-issues of the 5 prescribed issues so that they can implement
lessons in the classroom. A Q&A session will provide an opportunity for
participants to clarify any issues they may have relating to the Heritage Chinese Stage 6 Course. As
a long term product, the teaching programs will be continuously evaluated and
shared by all participants.
