Chinese Language Teachers’ Association (NSW) through the Professional Teachers’ Council NSW- NSW Institute of Teachers as the endorsed provider of Institute Registered professional development for the maintenance of accreditation at Proficient Teacher/ Professional Competence.

Scope of Endorsement

This course ‘Heritage Chinese Stage 6: Workshop 2’ is registered with the NSW Institute of Teachers for 2.5 hours of professional development at Proficient Teacher/ Professional Competence level.  Course Description: HSC Heritage Chinese is a new course characterised by its bilingual and bicultural elements. It focuses on issues, perspectives and contexts. For teachers, the planning and teaching can be quite challenging. Facilitated by Wei Leu who has extensive knowledge of the syllabus as well as experience of teaching, the purpose of this workshop is to help teachers gain a deep understanding of the requirements of the syllabus so that they can develop effective strategies and useful resources.

 Course outline: The workshop will include the demonstration of effective strategies and useful resources. The Intercultural Language Teaching & Learning approach will be discussed and applied in developing teaching strategies. Activities which will develop students’ higher-order and critical thinking skills will be discussed and shared. Participants will also have a chance to select a variety of online resources for engaging students and supporting their learning. As a long term product, the strategies and resources will be continuously developed, improved and shared by all participants.

Course outline: The workshop will include the explicit interpretation of the syllabus and the analysis of the examination specification and the HSC paper. Participants will be divided into groups to design and produce a scope & sequence plan and units of work, based on the requirements of the syllabus.  They will also work with other teachers to design a mapping which will include the sub-issues of the 5 prescribed issues so that they can implement lessons in the classroom. A Q&A session will provide an opportunity for participants to clarify any issues they may have relating to the Heritage Chinese Stage 6 Course. As a long term product, the teaching programs will be continuously evaluated and shared by all participants.
